Summer Reading Programs at Alpena’s George N. Fletcher Public Library Soon to Begin

Summer reading programs at the Alpena Library keep children learning and participating throughout their break. Summer learning loss, also known as Summer Slide, is a phenomenon that refers to the decline in students’ academic achievement. “During the summer break, our summer reading program this year is Adventure Begins at Your Library.  We’ll have activities for ages zero through however old. We have programs available weekly. We’ll have all sorts of fun, and our kickoff is June 15th this year, “Head of Youth Services at George N. Fletcher Public Library, Autumn Tencate said. The library is a great place for kids to make friends and learn.

“You can expect to have lots of fun. We’ve got different programs planned for the week, performers coming for our kick and our finale. Our goal this year is to reach 300,000 minutes. We got pretty close to that last year, so we have full faith that everybody’s going to be able to reach that this year together,” said Tencate. Students who read during the summer gain an average of one month of reading proficiency. “You calculate out your minutes, 15 minutes at a time. So, 15 minutes of reading, 15 minutes of listening to an audio book, 15 minutes of reading subtitles on your favorite show could even count.” she said.
