Over the last week, continuous rainfall has led to minor flooding and many waterlogged basements. In the last week, Alpena received 3.8 inches of rain saturating the ground and raising water levels in local area rivers, lakes and streams. This rainfall totals surpasses Alpena’s average for the entire month of June. On Saturday, a new record was set with 1.6 inches of rain recorded at the Alpena Regional Airport, breaking the previous record of 1.42 inches set on June 22nd, 1990.

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for northeast Michigan on Friday night, which expired on Sunday morning. Nearly two inches of rain fell and Alpena on Saturday alone. By Sunday afternoon, some of the floodwaters had begun to recede. Areas experiencing minor flooding included neighborhoods behind the Thunder Bay Shopping Center and properties near Golf Course Road. The National Weather Service explained that the hot and humid conditions early last week, followed by cooler air moving into the region, created a perfect scenario for heavy rain along the low front.
